Healthy Remedies

Natural first aid for travel.

After many years of travel, and many eateries of questionable hygiene, I have found a natural remedy for food poisoning. Many a trip has been postponed, delayed or canceled by a questionable meal that ended in diarrhea, stomach cramps and nausea.

Most food poisoning occurs in reputable restaurants. The food these restaurants purchase, such as fresh vegetables from other countries or their own, may have been contaminated during harvest. The end results are, you are sick, that you used caution in selecting your restaurant, and your trip is in threat of delay or cancellation.

There is a product in most health food stores that has been overlooked or unknown by travelers. The product is called activated charcoal. These capsules can be taken six to eight capsules at a time if you suspect food poisoning. The charcoal absorbs the toxins in your digestive tract, captures it and it is eliminated harmlessly. Should your symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea continue past 24 hours, you should consult a physician. The only side effect that you will notice, in addition to getting well, is that your stools will turn black.

If you have food poisoning:
Take six to eight capsules of activated charcoal with a cup of water or rehydration drink after each bowel movement.
As you begin to feel better eat low-fat foods such as applesauce, bananas, rice, crackers or toast.

Additional tips for preventing food poisoning:

  • Drink bottled water, pasteurized milk or juice.
  • Avoid eating salad dressings such as Caesar salad made with eggs.
  • Steer clear of raw or undercooked meats and eggs.
  • Shellfish should be steamed at least 15 minutes.
  • Leafy vegetables that are washed with the local water can contain contaminants that can cause food poisoning. Eating vegetables, fruits and shellfish that are washed with contaminated water in the country whose water supply is questionable is like playing a bit of roulette, not advisable.
  • By the same token ice is also taboo in the country where the water is questionable. Request drinks without ice.
  • If you are still in doubt about the water, add colloidal silver to ensure that the water is safe to drink.
  • Wash your hands often. Carry personalized individual hand wash and sanitizers.
  • Do not brush your teeth using water from the tap (unless you add colloidal silver).
  • Avoid water entering your mouth while showering.
