Natural first aid for travel.

Saturday, August 12th, 2006

After many years of travel, and many eateries of questionable hygiene, I have found a natural remedy for food poisoning. Many a trip has been postponed, delayed or canceled by a questionable meal that ended in diarrhea, stomach cramps and nausea.

Most food poisoning occurs in reputable restaurants. The food these restaurants purchase, such as fresh vegetables from other countries or their own, may have been contaminated during harvest. The end results are, you are sick, that you used caution in selecting your restaurant, and your trip is in threat of delay or cancellation.

There is a product in most health food stores that has been overlooked or unknown by travelers. The product is called activated charcoal. These capsules can be taken six to eight capsules at a time if you suspect food poisoning. The charcoal absorbs the toxins in your digestive tract, captures it and it is eliminated harmlessly. Should your symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea continue past 24 hours, you should consult a physician. The only side effect that you will notice, in addition to getting well, is that your stools will turn black.

If you have food poisoning:
Take six to eight capsules of activated charcoal with a cup of water or rehydration drink after each bowel movement.
As you begin to feel better eat low-fat foods such as applesauce, bananas, rice, crackers or toast.

Additional tips for preventing food poisoning:

  • Drink bottled water, pasteurized milk or juice.
  • Avoid eating salad dressings such as Caesar salad made with eggs.
  • Steer clear of raw or undercooked meats and eggs.
  • Shellfish should be steamed at least 15 minutes.
  • Leafy vegetables that are washed with the local water can contain contaminants that can cause food poisoning. Eating vegetables, fruits and shellfish that are washed with contaminated water in the country whose water supply is questionable is like playing a bit of roulette, not advisable.
  • By the same token ice is also taboo in the country where the water is questionable. Request drinks without ice.
  • If you are still in doubt about the water, add colloidal silver to ensure that the water is safe to drink.
  • Wash your hands often. Carry personalized individual hand wash and sanitizers.
  • Do not brush your teeth using water from the tap (unless you add colloidal silver).
  • Avoid water entering your mouth while showering.

Insomnia Recipes

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

There are several reasons why a person can not get to sleep, including sleep apnea, snoring, leg movements, stress and age. These recipes are for individuals that find themselves staring at the ceiling, can’t go to sleep, but are not willing to cave in to prescription sleeping pills. You may need treatment for sleep disorders, but there are natural remedies that work very well.

Simply closing your eyes and nodding off to sleep, no longer is an option? So there is the long stare at the ceiling, that includes hours of anguish, tossing and turning, and still no sleep…

If you have the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep or daytime drowsiness you are suffering from insomnia. If stress is prevalent in your life such as work related, schedule changes, fatigue, medication, dramatic events, or family issues, make every effort to reduce the stress levels so that adequate sleep may be obtained.

Tea Recipes:

1 teaspoon of dried passionflower.
1 cup boiling water.
Let steep for 15 minutes before drinking.
Simple great tasting, insomnia tea.

1/3 teaspoon of dried passionflower.
2/3 teaspoon Valerian root
1 cup boiling water.
Let steep for 15 minutes before drinking.
More potent, insomnia tea with fair taste.

1 teaspoon Valerian root
1 cup boiling water.
Let steep for 15 minutes before drinking.
Most potent, insomnia tea, poor taste, but soothing.

1 teaspoon, your choice of (chamomile, skullcap, linden, lemon balm or hops)
1 cup boiling water.
Let steep for 15 minutes before drinking.
Relaxing insomnia teas with good taste.

Pillow Recipe:

Take a clean older pillow case and mix (all dried herbs) in a cup of chamomile, 1 cup of hops, 1 cup of lavender and a cup of rose petals, stitch the pillowcase closed and place this herb filled pillowcase between your sleeping pillow and its pillowcase. Now fluff your new herbal pillow, and it will release sleepy aromas.

Transfer Energy:

Before spending too much time staring at the ceiling, soak a washcloth with cold water, lie in bed on your back and put the cold compress on your abdomen. Some believe the compress will pull energy from the head to the torso thus relieving stress that is keeping you awake.

Recipe 100:

Start counting backwards from 100, slowly expressing each number silently to yourself. If you lose your place or forget what number you said, start over.

Music recipe:

Search for light hearted Baroque music by Bach, Händel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi and play this music as a sleep inducer.

Sleep Tonic:

1 teaspoon Siberian ginseng extract. Quiets the nerves and allows you to enter a state of slumber.

Imagine sleep through visualization:

Assume your normal sleep position, relax and imagine a setting that is real, calming, such as a seashore or high mountain view. If this doesn’t conjure up scenes of relaxation then go to a place in your mind, that you were actually at, that was soothing, such as a lake visit, swinging in a hammock or reclining in a lawn chair. Imagine smelling the fresh air and hearing the subtle sounds of harmony, simple bird sounds, water lapping at your feet, leaves rustling in the breeze, imagine your toes in the water, the sun upon your arms and relax and live the imagination. Sleep is next.

Sleep Ticnture:
3 Tablespoons of black cohosh root
1 cup brandy
Cover and let stand for three weeks
Take 20- 30 drops of the new ticnture in a cup of warm water 30 minutes before retiring,
drink the entire cup.
Place a drop of lavender oil inside the ear. Pleasant dreams.

Aging causes insomnia. Antiaging supplements help support natural sleep patterns.

Natural remedy for headache.

Tuesday, August 08th, 2006

The number one suggestion for headache remedy is hydration. Water consumption keeps the body flushed of contaminants. Toxins in the body accumulate in the colon and can cause constipation as well as your headache.

Diet ingredients such as caffeine and alcohol, monosodium glutamate and aspartame can initiate headaches. These unwanted additives should be avoided when using a natural remedy to prevent a headache.

Dr. Judy Griffin, through Baylor University, has outlined how flower essences can reduce pain and restore good health. Lavender oil or peppermint oil applied on the back of your neck, and/or your temples, may reduce tension headaches.

Reflexology applied to the feet and hands can be a great benefit to reducing headaches. Even having someone massage your neck and back will reduce the tension in the muscles and usually he’s a headache.

A visit to the chiropractor may be new to you, but has proven for years to give relief to patients that have been plagued by headaches that reoccur and are problematic to relieve.

Stress may be the culprit, that has caused your headache. Exercise, meditation, relaxation and change of daily routine can help ease stress and reduce the chance of headaches.

Ice packs can be used on the areas of your head or neck that seem to generate the headache. Be sure to wrap the gel pack in a towel. Never applied in the ice pack directly to the skin.

Your environment could very well be the cause of your headache. Air pollution in or outside of your home or office, filtering in to your living space, or cigarette smoke can be the underlying cause of your headache.

The herb, white willow bark, relieves pain in inflammatory conditions such as headaches. Ginkgo biloba gotu kola, Omega-3, flax oil, capsicum and magnesium are supplements that improve circulation and reduce headache symptoms.

Support your immune system with natural antibiotics.

Natural Remedy for Stress

Monday, August 07th, 2006

Stress exercises that prevent being shrunk.

The reversing of “controlling time” instead of “trying to get caught up with a schedule” or “time controlling you”, will prevent stress.

Exercises:

Turn off the TV, all music, find a place by yourself, quiet, relax and ask the question “how do I feel?” If you feel anxious, upset, or nervous, start with these few techniques.

When the phone rings, take a deep breath, look out the window, or at a pleasing photo then exhale before answering.

Try to have an ending and beginning to each task. This definition will program progress. Take a break between each task. At least a minute.

Throughout the day, take several small breaks of just a couple of minutes each (up to 5 min.). Using this time to oxygenate the lungs, fill your lungs to capacity by inhaling slowly, then exhale slowly pursing your lips as if exhaling through a straw.

Occasionally, close your eyes and become conscious of the sounds and smells in your surrounding. While your eyes are closed, relax the muscles of your body, starting with the small muscles around your eyes, your cheeks, your neck, your shoulders and arms, your back, legs and feet.

Take a walk for pleasure. At least one block twice a week. Increase the distance as your body conditions itself to the ease of the distance. Always drink at least 8 oz. of water prior to your walk.

For the next 21 days practice these exercises daily.

Consciously, think of the complementary things of your day that are not the high points. Take a few moments to think about measuring the coffee, the movements of the vacuum cleaner, walking the hall, observe the architecture, and above all notice the natural life that you live in, such as the birds, the trees, the ants, the flowers and the streams.

Take the time to schedule a year in advance, some downtime that includes the natural life in the above paragraph. Although this can be included in your normal vacation, this time should be special and not rushed. Take a lawn chair to the forest or a stream and sit, relax, read or just sleep. Once a month schedule a few hours or a day, especially for you. Write it down like an appointment with your doctor, its that important! During this time take a walk, drive or sleep, meet a new person, read a new book. Your life will be changed, predicated upon what you read and who you meet next month and each moth thereafter.

Remember to care for your body with natural remedies and supplements.

Colon Cleanse and the Gallbladder

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Hippocrates stated, “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

The eating habits of modern-day man has changed significantly from that of a hundred years ago. The increased consumption of white flour and sugar compounded with pollutants, metals, pathogens and foreign substances has abused, clogged and polluted our intestinal tract.

The overweight American has a diversity of complications regarding their health. The lack of exercise, and the consumption of dead foods, and the wholesale drinking of cola drinks has given the body an overload of sugar, destroying the B-complex vitamins and has impacted the colon of everyone that falls in this habitual rut.

These eating habits influence not only the organs of the body but will also reduce your ability to make decisions, reduces your energy, and diminishes your strength.

Many health disorders are the result of clogged internal organs not function properly. The organs are impacted with built up matter not normally seen in healthy organs. Colon impaction of fecal matter, gallbladder of gall stones, kidney with kidney stones, arteries with plaque are all a direct result of improper nutrition and eating habits.

Our body notifies us with “symptoms” when it can no longer handle the polluting of the organs. To regain good health, the accumulated trash in the body needs to be eliminated and then the healing force within will help us to get well. Good health does not come from taking drugs. An alternate way of life can be excepted when drugs are taken… (not always the good life). Antioxidants have been heralded as a giver of true health, when in fact, although they are very good for the body, your best health can be attained by eliminating the living and non-living foreign substances that are hampering the primary organs from performing natural, peak functions.

Processed foods include solvents, dyes, toxins, chemicals, and metals that when ingested are stored in organs and fat tissues and are received by the body as foreign matter. The accumulation of this foreign matter usually will result in disease or infection.

Daily doses of massive toxic pollutants invade the body and provide a thriving environment for viruses, parasites, fungus and bacteria. Our immune system cannot keep up with this health jeopardizing diet. To correct the damage that has been done to date we must realize that the colon affects every organ and every part of our body. We must cleanse the colon, second, perform a liver cleanse, and then cleanse the kidneys. The next step is to review your diet and eliminate those items that are polluting your body.

It has been said that every major disease can be traced back to an unhealthy colon. So if “death starts in the colon” then we we need to pay more attention to keeping a clean healthy colon!

The gallbladder has a function in normal digestion, yet thousands will have the gallbladder removed rather than take a few hours to perform a gallstone remedy.

Calcium, the unhealthy natural remedy?

Wednesday, August 09th, 2006

Calcium has long been known to be one of the essential nutritional building blocks of our body. So why is it that Americans are consuming more calcium than ever and still have a rate of osteoporosis that is going up and not down? The number of hip fractures are increasing and cardiac arrest is the number one killer in America.

Our source of calcium supplements is either laboratory made or inorganic. The majority of this mineral is made from “organic” rocks and is very difficult to assimilate by the body. Therefore, this extra calcium accumulates in your muscles, your joints, your kidneys, and even in your arteries. This form of calcium is unnatural and harmful to your body.

Calcium is essential for numerous body functions beyond bone mineralization. The functioning of many enzymes, blood coagulation, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, the permeability of membranes, and the maintenance and function of cell membranes are all accomplished with the proper amount of calcium intake.

The key is that calcium must be taken in conjunction with the proper amount of magnesium, which is five parts calcium to one part magnesium (5:1 ratio). Most supplements on the market are sold with the absence of the proper amount of magnesium. The second key to correct calcium assimilation is the origin of the calcium supply. The body is designed to assimilate nutrients and minerals that are found in living tissue, such as plants. The best source of calcium is from plant sources. If you are going to buy supplements, you should look for “calcium made from plants”. If it is not specified as derived from plants, don’t buy it. If the proper ratio of magnesium is not included, don’t buy it.

The government has promoted a recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, but has failed to mention that this recommended daily allowance is for a person that is completely healthy, weighs about 140 pounds and has no stress in their life. If this physical description does not fit you and your body, you will need to adjust your recommended daily allowance for all nutrients. The RDA of calcium is 1000 mg a day.

We have been told to drink our milk. There is more calcium in three quarters of a cup collard greens or 4 ounces of tofu or than there is in a cup of milk.

Foods rich in calcium:
Almonds 1/4 cup 89 mg
Blackstrap molasses 2 Tbsp 400 mg
Bok choy, cooked 1 cup 158 mg
Broccoli, cooked 1 cup 94 mg
Collard greens, cooked 1 cup 357 mg
Kale, cooked 1 cup 179 mg
Mustard greens, cooked 1 cup 152 mg
Okra, cooked 1 cup 172 mg
Soy milk, commercial, plain 8 ounces 80 mg
soy yogurt, plain 6 ounces 80-250 mg
Turnip greens, cooked 1 cup 249 mg
Tofu, processed with nigari 4 ounces 80-230 mg

Soybeans and soynuts, okra, collards, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, some grains and beans also supply calcium from the desired plant source.

Plant derived Trace Minerals.
